NEST BOXES FOR THE EUROPEAN ROLLER WERE INSTALLED IN ROMANIA
As the nesting season approaches, Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority supports the nesting opportunities by installing 100 wooden boxes for European Roller!
The European Roller (Coracias garrulus) nests in earth slopes holes, in tree hollows, and sometimes in cavities of concrete electricity poles. The main causes for the decline of this beautiful blue-colored bird population are the disappearance of the feeding areas and the loss of nesting sites.
During February, DDBRA installed 100 nest boxes for the European Roller in ROSPA0031 Danube Delta and Razim-Sinoie Complex in Romania. This activity aims preventing disturbance and interaction with powerlines by safe breeding and feeding opportunities.
Out of the total of 100 nest boxes, 85 were mounted on medium tension poles at a safe height of 3-4 meters from the ground, the remaining 15 being placed on trees. The best electricity poles were identified together with the Rețele Electrice Dobrogea SA Project Partner, in suitable habitats in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.
We wish a successful nesting season for the European Roller!
