WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY CELEBRATED WITH SAFER POWER LINES ALONG THE DANUBE RIVER

Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!” is a theme of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day, celebrated on May 9th, highlighting the crucial role of community and citizen science in tracking and protecting migratory species. Every year, more than 1.5 bilion birds migrate through African-Eurasian flyways to nest and raise offspring. While autumn bird migration proceeds gradually, with birds moving primarily in search of food, in the spring—when birds breed—hormones take precedence over food, which is why this migration is shorter and more energy-intensive. Thanks to bird ringing and modern technology, we continously learn more about the fascinating journey of migratory birds.

HELP US IN OUR WORK: FILL OUT A SHORT SURVEY!

The Danube Delta, one of Europe’s most valuable wetlands and a paradise for wildlife, is known for its extraordinary bird biodiversity. Where the Danube River meets the Black Sea, a mosaic of lakes, reed beds, channels, and flooded forests creates the perfect habitat for hundreds of bird species. From spectacular migratory flocks to rare and protected species, the Delta is a vital refuge, breeding ground, and stopover site along major migration routes. Its rich ecosystems depend entirely on the natural dynamics of water — seasonal floods, flowing channels, and healthy wetlands sustain an incredible diversity of life. Discover the beauty and the importance of the Danube Delta, our project area, with Alexandru Dorosencu, Senior Scientific Researcher at the Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development in Romania.
