IMPERIAL EAGLES FROM SLOVAKIA STAY WITH NEIGHBOURS
Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca) with a "backpack" - a mini-transmitter, which was fitted to six individuals in Slovakia in June 2022 was spotted and photographed in Lower Austria region. This particular individual is from the village of Neded in the Šaľa district.
It is amazing that 5 out of 6 juveniles that recieved the satellite transmitters are still alive, as the mortality rate already during the first year tends to be statistically higher from the data collected so far. According to the latest information, they are most popular with our neighbours:
- two juveniles stayed in Austria: one in the north near the border with the Czech Republic and the other south of Vienna
- two of them were in Hungary: one was not far away - in the Hungarian-Austrian border area, and the biggest traveller went to the very south of Hungary near the village of Mohacs
- one individual stayed "at home" in Slovakia - south of Trnava :)
The transmitters were installed on the Imperial Eagles within the LIFE Danube Free Sky project. The precious data collected from the transmitters helps us to identify the locations where the most endangered juveniles reside and the dangers they have to face. This way the mitigation measures can be targeted directly at these locations.
