HIGH-VOLTAGE TRANSMISSION LINES ARE SAFER FOR BIRDS IN CROATIA
In the LIFE Danube Free Sky project, the installation of flight diverters for birds by the Croatian Transmission System Operator (HOPS) on high-voltage 110 kV transmission lines began in January and is still ongoing.
There are two such transmission lines in the project area: Beli Manastir - Osijek and Beli Manastir - Apatin, which pose a danger to the biodiversity of Kopački rit and its immediate surroundings.
Installing diverters that have reflective elements will help birds in flight to spot the conductors in time and react to avoid a collision. Diverters are installed using a drone, which allows for faster and safer installation. Upon completion of the application of mitigation measures, more than 20 km of transmission lines on the project area will be safer for birds.
