FREE SKY FOR BIRDS 2026 CONFERENCE: BIRD CONSERVATION EXPERTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD GATHERED IN BRATISLAVA

Reducing the negative impact of overhead power lines on birds was the main topic of the international conference Free Sky for Birds 2026, held on March 10–12 in Bratislava, Slovakia, where experts from across Europe and beyond gathered to share solutions and strengthen international cooperation. The conference brought together 140 participants from 26 countries representing conservation organizations, academic institutions, governmental bodies, energy and railway companies, and manufacturers of protective elements.

In Romania, 100 nest boxes for the European Roller (Coracias garrulus) were installed within the LIFE Danube Free Sky project with great success. Rollers occupied 28 boxes in 2024 and 39 boxes during the 2025 season. How were the locations for the nest boxes selected, and what criteria had to be met? What makes a site suitable for this spectacular, colorful bird? Journey into the stunning landscapes of the Danube Delta with Alexandru Dorosencu, Senior Scientific Researcher at the Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development, and discover how science and conservation come together to support one of Europe’s most charismatic species!

Watch another short video from series Introducing LIFE Danube Free Sky in Romania, this time with Project Manager Șerban – Ioan Vasile from energy distribution company Rețele Electrice Muntenia, Banat, Dobrogea will introduce you to project activities that took place in the area of the Danube Delta in Romania in order to save our precious birds.

RECORD NUMBER OF THE DALMATIAN PELICANS HAVE BEEN RECORDED IN SERBIA!

Since 2018, a smaller population of Dalmatian Pelicans (Pelecanus crispus) has been regularly wintering, but also present during summer, on the Danube between Negotin and Kladovo areas in eastern Serbia. So far, their numbers have been increasing slightly year after year. In late December 2025, workers from the Elixir factory near Prahovo informed our project partner - Birdlife Serbia that a large flock of Pelicans had formed downstream from the settlement.
