FIFTH VOLUNTEER ACTION ORGANIZED BY THE NATURE PARK KOPAČKI RIT
On Wednesday, March 19, the fifth and final volunteer action in Croatia was held at Kopački rit at the Kopačevo Visitors Center within the LIFE Danube Free Sky project. Students and teachers from the Faculty of Educational Sciences from Osijek participated in the workshop, during which we made nest boxes for the European roller (Coracias garrulus). European roller is one of the 12 target species in the project that once nested in Kopački rit, but due to the modernization of agricultural production, they no longer nest there.
Europen Roller nest in natural tree hollows, but in the absence of trees on agricultural land, they are happy to accept such nest boxes. The workshop was held in cooperation with the Osijek Zoo, which we would like to thank for donating the material for the boxes. A total of 10 nest boxes were made, which will be placed in the project area in the coming period. The students also painted the nest boxes so that they would last as long as possible. After making them, a demonstration of setting up one nest box was held, as well as bird watching to the Sakadaš lake and a boat ride through Special Zoological Reserve.
