In order to ensure birds' safety during their migration routes, the first batch – 640 bird flight diverters have been installed on the high-voltage transmission lines crossing the Danube in Hungary, Százhalombatta. What challenges needed to be overcome and what technology was used for the installation of flight diverters over the Danube? Check out the short video made by our project partner MAVIR - Az energia irányítója and find out more! :)

Awareness-raising is an important part of our project. Notice boards installed in all project countries within the project area will inform the general public, local citizens, and passers-by about our project, its main activities, and goals. So far the notice boards have been installed in

  • Bulgaria (Nikopol, Bulgarene, Kozloduy)
  • Croatia (Kopački Rit Nature Park (Mali Sakadaš, Kopačevo), Castle Complex Tikveš (Lug))
  • Hungary (Győr, Szigetcsép)

  • 82 field assistants trained
  • 1500 km of power lines searched
  • more than 1500 cadavers found
  • 230 maps prepared for the baseline surveys
  • 6 transmitters installed on saker falcons
  • more than 10ha of land transformation to the pastures with first results in increasing species spotted within the area
  • 15 notice boards have been installed so far
  • successful presentation of the project in media (191 tracked media appearances)
  • and at 14 networking events
We are looking forward to the next challenges in 2022 while we will continue with our work to create a free sky over the Danube for our precious birds.

The 12th MAVIR Bird Conservation Conference was organized by our project partner MAVIR in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture (AM), the Herman Ottó Institute (HOI), BirdLife Hungary (MME), and LIFE Danube Free Sky project. The Conference took place on the 25th of November 2021 and was held online due to the worsening pandemic situation at the time being. More than 130 experts from various countries and organizations attended the conference. 13 interesting presentations within the theme birds' conservation and power lines were presented at the conference and representatives of the organizations that are part of our project (MAVIR, RPS, DDBRA, HEP, BSPB, BPSSS, CEZ) held together 7 presentations describing their activities, experiences, and successes within this field. You can find the presentation at this link: HERE (scroll down for the English part). The initial plan was to organize the Conference in Tata city, Hungary, where the Tata Wild Goose Festival was ongoing and participants would be able to watch the thousands of geese on the Tata Lake. Unfortunately, the event was organized only online at the end, but you can still check out a bit of the atmosphere from the area through the video created by the project partner MAVIR - see below :)
